Introduction
I. Introduction to the Department and Graduate School
The master program was established in 1962 and the doctoral degree began in 1975, which was the first one in Taiwan to offer Ph.D. degree in philosophy. Dr. Jing-Shiung Wu, the honored President of our university, served as the first director of graduate school. The undergraduate program was set up in 1986 and Dr. Chen-Hua Huang was the chairperson in charge of both graduate and undergraduate program. The chairperson has been the director of graduate school and the department chair ever since. Dr. CHEN,JEN-KUEN is the current chair of this department.
II.Objective
To lay equal stress on Chinese and Western philosophy and to enhance dialogue between them.
III. Education Goals
1. Undergraduate Program
The undergraduate program intends to cultivate students’ abilities of independent and critical thinking, to train students’ capabilities of philosophical writing, logic, and evaluation of arguments, and finally to promote good and educated citizens.
2. Master Program
The current goal of the master program is firstly Chinese philosophy and secondly Western philosophy; the mid-range target is to seek the equal attention to Chinese and Western philosophy; the ultimate goal is the equal stress on Chinese and Western philosophy. The master program also intends to enhance students’ philosophical knowledge and their independent research aptness.
3. Ph.D. Program
The present goal of the Ph.D. program is Chinese philosophy; “firstly Chinese philosophy and secondly Western philosophy” is our mid-range aim; our ultimate goal is the equal stress on Chinese and Western philosophy. Furthermore, the Ph.D. program is to foster students’ capacities of developing novel philosophical thinking, and finally to supply good academic faculty.
IV. Features
1. Undergraduate Program
The specialties of faculty and courses between Chinese and Western philosophy are balanced and fully developed. Also, the course diversity of Chinese and Western philosophy is emphasized.
2. Master Program
We have solid and well-known faculty in Chinese philosophy. Besides, courses between Chinese and Western philosophy are offered balancedly and up-to-date.
3. Ph.D. Program
We have a high percentage of full-time professors and sufficient and substantial faculty and courses in Chinese philosophy.
